Even When the Connection Drops, the Response Still Reaches You

Flip one setting and your survey keeps working when the network fails. Answers are saved encrypted on the respondent's device, and the moment they are back online the response submits itself. Nobody has to remember anything, and nothing is lost.

What Offline Responses Change for the Data You Collect

Every Lost Signal Is a Lost Response. Until Now.
Every Lost Signal Is a Lost Response. Until Now.
A respondent halfway through a survey when the signal cuts out is a partial record and a wasted contact. On a bad venue network or a rural site that happens constantly, and every one of those responses is paid for but never delivered. Answers saved on the device turn a dropped connection into a delay instead of a loss.
Nobody Has to Remember to Come Back and Resubmit
Nobody Has to Remember to Come Back and Resubmit
Asking a respondent to return later and finish is asking for a response you will not get. When the queued answer sends itself the moment the network returns, completion no longer depends on anyone remembering anything. The fieldwork you paid for arrives without a single follow-up chase.
Zero Duplicates. Zero Cleanup. Zero Wait.
Zero Duplicates. Zero Cleanup. Zero Wait.
Retry logic that fires twice creates duplicate records, burned distribution codes, and hours of dataset cleaning before analysis can start. A duplicate guard on submission means the same response cannot land twice, so the data reaching your dashboard is ready to work with immediately.

How Offline Surveys Work in BlockSurvey

Turn On Offline Responses

In the survey editor, go to Settings and then General, and switch on Offline responses. If your survey includes questions that need a live connection, such as payment, wallet, social login, or AI follow-up, a notice tells you which ones. Everything else still works offline. Publish and share the link as usual. The setting travels with the survey.

Turn On Offline Responses

They Keep Answering, Signal or Not

The survey is cached on the device, so it stays usable through a connection drop. Every answer is saved on the device and encrypted as they go, and a banner reassures them their answers are safe. If any question needs a connection, a second banner names exactly how many.

They Keep Answering, Signal or Not

Responses Submitted Offline, Safely Queued

The finished response is encrypted and queued on the device. The respondent is told it is safe and that it will send itself, so nobody has to come back and resubmit later.

Responses Submitted Offline, Safely Queued

It Syncs Itself Back, Exactly Once

The moment the network returns, the queued response is delivered automatically with no action from the respondent. Two delivery engines cover every browser, and a client response ID acts as a duplicate guard on the server, so the response is stored exactly once with no duplicate records and no wasted distribution codes. It lands in your results still encrypted, readable only by you.

Where Offline Responses Save the Data You Would Otherwise Lose

  • Field Researchers — Interviews Beyond Reliable Coverage
Field Researchers — Interviews Beyond Reliable Coverage
Household surveys and rural fieldwork run through patchy coverage all day. Enumerators keep working through the dead zones, answers save encrypted on the device, and the day's responses deliver themselves once the team is back in range.
  • NGOs and Development Programs — Monitoring in Low-Connectivity Regions
NGOs and Development Programs — Monitoring in Low-Connectivity Regions
Program monitoring and beneficiary feedback happen in exactly the regions where infrastructure is weakest. Field officers collect on schedule regardless of the network, and nothing depends on a respondent or an officer remembering to resubmit later.
  • Events and Conferences — Venues Where Wifi Collapses
Events and Conferences — Venues Where Wifi Collapses
Conference wifi buckles the moment a few thousand attendees connect at once. Session feedback and exit surveys keep collecting through the congestion, and the queued responses deliver themselves as the floor clears.
  • Retail and Hospitality — Stockrooms, Basements and Dead Zones
Retail and Hospitality — Stockrooms, Basements and Dead Zones
In-store audits and staff surveys still need to happen in the parts of a building where signal disappears. The audit runs the same everywhere, and nothing is lost moving between the shop floor and the storeroom.
  • Trade Shows and Pop-Ups — Saturated Venue Networks
Trade Shows and Pop-Ups — Saturated Venue Networks
Trade show floors are notorious for saturated networks and paid wifi that fails when it matters. Booth teams capture visitor feedback continuously, and every queued response syncs on its own once the network recovers.
  • Public Health and Community Outreach — Mobile Units and Clinics
Public Health and Community Outreach — Mobile Units and Clinics
Mobile health units and outreach clinics operate in locations chosen for population need, not network quality. Intake forms and assessments keep running, with every response encrypted on the device until it delivers itself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn on offline responses?

In the survey editor, go to Settings and then General, and switch on Offline responses. That is the only step. The setting travels with the survey when you share the link.

Does turning offline responses on change anything for online respondents?

No. Offline is a safety net, not a mode switch. Respondents with a working connection see exactly the same survey and the same experience. The offline behavior only activates if the network drops.

Do respondents need to install an app?

No. The survey is cached on the device when it loads, so it keeps working through a connection drop with nothing to install and nothing to enable.

What happens to questions that need the internet?

Some question types need a live connection, including payment, wallet, social login, and AI follow-up questions. When you enable offline responses, a notice tells you if your survey contains any. Respondents can still answer everything else offline, and a banner tells them exactly how many questions need a connection to finish.

What if a respondent closes the survey before submitting?

Their progress is saved on the device and encrypted. They can reopen the survey later and continue from where they left off with nothing lost.

How does the response get submitted once the connection returns?

Automatically, with no action from the respondent. Two delivery engines cover the cases: with the tab still open the response delivers on all browsers, and with the tab closed it delivers on Chrome and Edge.

Will I end up with duplicate responses?

No. Each response carries a client response ID that acts as a duplicate guard on the server. Even if both delivery engines fire, the response is stored exactly once, so there are no duplicate records and no wasted distribution codes.

Are offline responses still end-to-end encrypted?

Yes. Answers are encrypted on the device as they are saved, stay encrypted while queued, and land in your results still encrypted. Only you can read them.

Do captcha-protected surveys work offline?

Captcha verification always happens live, so a survey protected by captcha needs a connection at the point of verification. Everything else in the survey still follows the standard offline behavior.
